The Book From the Inside Out

Thursday 26th February 2015
18:30
Old College Lecture Theatre 183, South Bridge, EH8 9YL

You’ve all been waiting for it with eager anticipation… The Society for Young Publishers has teamed up with Edinburgh University's own PublishED society to bring you the event of the year!

Ever wondered what really goes into publishing a book?

'The Book - From the Inside Out' will see the cream of the crop take to the stage in rather a dramatic fashion as they strive to tell you exactly what goes on in their field – all in a 6 minute presentation! That’s only 40 seconds per slide for our industry experts to get you revved up and informed about the work they do!

This fun and relaxed event will walk you through the process of publishing a book - from the inside out. Our vibrant speakers will be covering acquisition, editorial, art & design, production, marketing & publicity and sales… and in just 36 minutes!

You can get your tickets through our Eventbrite page, and as always this will be a free event for our members and for PublishED members, £3 for non-members.

6.30pm at the Old College Lecture Theatre 183
7.30pm at Biblos for buffet & networking

We can't wait to see you there!

Blind Date with a Book

Wednesday 4th February
16:30-18:30
Teviot Balcony Room

As we are getting into the Valentine's mood, we invite you to join us on a blind date with a difference...

Come along to Teviot Balcony Room on Wednesday 4th February from 4.30pm until 6.30pm to choose your perfect literary match from our excellent selection of books. All of the books we have to give away will be wrapped up with a 3 word description written on top so you have to select one based on this very limited profile.

Come and find out what you actually look for in a book. And if the one you choose isn't quite right, swap with one of the other members on the night - never before has dating been so simple!

The event will be free for members and £3 for non-members (which is the price of a membership fee so be smart, think ahead and join PublishED!).

See you then!

Launch Party for Issue 10 of

THE INKWELL MAGAZINE

Friday 5th December 2014

19:00 start Forrest Cafe (141 Lauriston Place)

It has finally arrived ... PublishED have been working hard over the past few months in order to put together the tenth issue of the Inkwell, featuring short stories, poetry, art and overall greatness. Now the issue is ready to release and that means it needs a proper launch party! We sincerely hope you will come join us.

Take a break from revision and come down to The Forest cafe, where we will provide (free!) wine of different kind and nibbles. There will also be different readings happening, maybe even from the latest issue, as well as an art exhibition compiled in collaboration with The International Union of Mail Artists. It promises to be a great event and we look forward to seeing all of you there!

---

We would like to thank Forest cafe for providing the venue. Also, thanks must go out to the University of Edinburgh's English Literature Department, which have contributed to funding not only the magazine itself, but also this event.

Oh and did we mention there's free wine...? Yes!

DRUNK Writing Workshop

Monday 3rd November 2014
19:30 start
Teviot Underground

Take a break from the midterm madness and join us for an evening of good company, creative writing and a drink or two if you fancy it.

PublishED wants to invite you to take off that dusty cloak of academic writing for a night. Release those clammy hands, frantically clawing at the laptop to reach the word count and let them freely scrawl on the page...come to PublishED’s first Drunk Writing Workshop of the year!

Join us this Monday 3 November at 19:30 in Teviot Underground for a range of exercises, including a Mad Libs game using an extract from 50 Shades of Grey (at least you can blame the liquor for all the blushing).

Those who don’t fancy drinking are very welcome too.

It’ll be free for members (wahoo!) and £2 for non-members.

Check out the event on Facebook for more info and see you there!

Next event: Writers at Pleasance

Our next event is in collaboration with Literature Society: Writers at Pleasance!

We invite you to join us at the Pleasance to hear from a variety of up-and-coming writers, both from around Edinburgh and further afield. Headlining the event are Alan Gillis and Claire Askew.

Alan Gillis is a poet and a member of the English Literature department. He has published four collections of poetry, and was recently named a "Next Generation Poet" by the the Poetry Book Society, following in the footsteps of Don Paterson and Carol Anne Duffy.

Claire Askew's poetry has appeared in numerous publications, including The Guardian, Poetry Scotland, PANK and Popshot. Her debut pamphlet, The Mermaid and the Sailors, was published in spring 2011 by Red Squirrel Press and was shortlisted for a 2010 Eric Gregory Award. She is currently reading for a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh.

Should be an excellent evening. We hope to see you there! Link to the Facebook event here.

Creative Writing Workshop

Wednesday 8th October 2014
18:30-20:00
Middle Reading Room - Teviot

The editors of PublishED's magazine The Inkwell are hosting our second Creative Writing Workshop of the semester on Wednesday 8th October in Teviot's Middle Reading Room from 18:30-20:00.

Join us for an informal evening of word-wielding – we’ll have a range of writing games and exercises for all levels of experience and ability, all of which focus on developing our writing in a fun and friendly environment.

Submissions are now open for this semester's edition of The Inkwell and the theme is RITUALS (check our facebook page for more details and where to submit). So this is an excellent opportunity to practice writing from prompts, get advice and ask the editors any questions you may have, or of course to work on a piece that you can submit!

Everyone is welcome whether you are already a member or not. Entry will cost £1 for members and £3 for non-members.

See all you scribblers then.
